CEOs – Indirect Sales Channels Just Fulfill Demand, Right?

I recently attended a conference for CEO’s and senior executives at which a number of learned speakers shared their experience about overcoming the economic challenges faced by their audience. In private I asked several of the delegates what role their indirect sales channels – dealers, resellers, retailers and specialists could play in helping out. I say, “in private” pointedly because in public, CEO’s always praise their indirect sales channels because that is of course the right thing to do.

Without exception, they gave me variations on the same response – “indirect sales channels just fulfill demand…right?” Of course, I was neither surprised nor disappointed to hear this response. After running channel sales and marketing organisations for leading technology and consumer electronics vendors for many years, I have become all too familiar with the boardroom ignorance of and at times the contempt expressed towards “the channel”.

Many encounters with my own CEO’s over the years led me to the conclusion that the channel and indeed I (by association) failed to get the respect that we were due given the contribution we made. So I vowed that rather than simply “managing” the indirect channel business, I would make it my mission to provide my charges with all of the information, tools and resources at my disposal to generate demand rather than simply fulfilling it and to provide tangible evidence of their contribution through incremental sales.

The origins of the myth

The problem stems, I think from the fact that CEO’s rarely rise through the ranks having worked with the channel to any great extent. They’re direct sales guys, marketers, accountants or technologists for whom the channel has often been more of an irritation than an asset. What is more, indirect sales channels became very unfashionable in the dot com era. Dell led the way in persuading us that we should “cut out the middle man”. Indirect channels were portrayed as an unnecessary cost; fat, lazy and good-for-nothing. Leading vendors clamoured to replicate Dell’s model and set up their own online stores and dreamed of the day they could wave goodbye to the channel forever. What few foresaw was that the industry was going through a cycle and was experiencing the pain suffered by many industries before – the need to rationalise its supply chain in line with falling profitability. Dell was no more than a disruptive interloper shaking up perceptions of the established, conventional business model for a while. But as ever, what goes around comes around. Dell is now as wedded to an indirect channel as its competitors but along the way, its fortunes have waned and other vendors have ousted it from its once indomitable position as market leader. More of them later. Nevertheless, the damage was done and a generation of senior executives emerged who had no great affection for the channel.

As a result most of the multinational companies are now emerging more and more variety of products all over the world. With the help of appropriate market policies which go online with the socio-cultural requirements of the country can expand their complex network of the business.

When we talk about the creation of exclusive custom fitted clothing, due to the exposure of various fashion channels these contemporary trends are getting more and more cross cultural. So the designing skills and other fashion concepts are crossing the geological positions and ideological boundaries which lead the people of different parts of the world to be get united together regardless of their conventional outlook. This is the main reason behind fashion which had been taken as the reflection of the real physical progress made by some of the developing countries.

One of the primary purposes of the clothing items or the dress that we wear should be able to communicate many aspects including things or feelings that are impressive or subtle. That’s why the fashion houses or companies are trying to deal with their customers with more care, so that they can gain more profit in all their business operations. These companies nowadays formulate friendly policies towards its employees, suppliers and their valued customers. Along with the various advertising campaigns, lot of fashion shows which exhibit new designs and colours, serve to promote new attitudes and concepts also. All these shows not only display or make familiar with the new products that are available in the market, but also enable the targeted audience using visuals. In fact these types of modelling and fashion shows will increase the demand of the market and also help in promoting other associated businesses as well.

Project Runway – A Great Example of Fashion TV

The creative style of fashion and the pervasive nature of Television are two integral parts of popular culture. No television show is more popular than Project Runway in terms of fashion TV genre.

Reasons Why Project Runway and Fashion TV have Become so Well-Liked

People enjoy watching how clothing is first conceptualized from an initial design to the finished product because everyone has a preferred type of clothing that they wear. The television program Project Runway is an ideal example of fashion TV that not only shows that, but the challenges are the things that make all different types of people want to watch it.

Heidi Klum a German supermodel who is the producer of Project Runway who also happens to be a judge on the show as well. In addition to Heidi Klum there are two other regular judges: Michael Kors who is a well-known American fashion designer, and Nina Garcia, who is Elle Magazines fashion editor.

At various times they will also have guest judges for this fashion TV show, who in the past have involved prominent people such as Nicky Hilton, and Vera Wang. Tim Gunn from Parsons The New School of Design, is the contestants mentor throughout the entirety of the show.

Each week there are typically 16 contestants who must have an impact on the judges by completing in a successful manner a design challenge that is within an allotted amount of time. After the time is up, they and their models have to present designs in a runway show. The model of the contestant who successfully wins in the season finale of Project Runway ends up getting a fashion spread in Elle Magazine.
